In July 2018, Kamehameha Hawai'i transitioned the way we teach 'ōlelo Hawai'i from a grammar-based approach to a proficiency-based approach. Shifts in teacher mindset and practice, writing an aligned K-12 curriculum based on appropriate proficiency targets, and ongoing training and coaching of research-based best practices for effective language teaching and learning were made in order to build a community of Hawaiian language speakers across our kula.
